Dooars Travel Guide: Tourist Places, Tea Resorts & More

Dooars Destination

The Dooars is one of those parts of West Bengal where the landscape can change completely within a short drive. One moment you are travelling past rows of tea bushes, and a little later the same road can take you beside a forest, river or the foothills of the Himalayas.

Geographically, the Dooars lie along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, covering the plains immediately south of the Himalayan hill region. The wider belt extends roughly from the Teesta River in the west towards the Sankosh River in the east. Its location between the Himalayan foothills and the plains has created a landscape of forests, grasslands, rivers and large tea-growing areas.

The name "Dooars" is commonly connected with the word "doors". Historically, this belt provided routes or gateways between the plains of India and Bhutan. Even today, the Bhutan hills form an important part of the scenery in several eastern and northern parts of the region.

What makes a trip to the Dooars interesting is that you do not have to choose between tea tourism and wildlife tourism. Gorumara, Chapramari, Jaldapara and Buxa bring you closer to the forests and wildlife, while places such as Samsing, Suntalekhola, Jhalong, Bindu and Murti introduce you to rivers, tea gardens and Himalayan foothill scenery. West Bengal Tourism also identifies the Dooars with its forests, tea gardens and Himalayan foothill environment.

If you would like to experience this landscape while actually staying around a tea estate, Octavius Tea Resorts has two properties in Jalpaiguri district:

  • Sylee Bungalow at Damdim and
  • Nya Sylee Bungalow at Nagrakata.

We will tell you more about both a little further down.

Best Tourist Spots in Dooars

One mistake people often make while planning a Dooars trip is treating the entire region as one small tourist destination. It is actually spread over a fairly large area, and its attractions are located across different parts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts in West Bengal.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara National Park is one of the best-known wildlife destinations in the Dooars and lies in the Himalayan foothill region of Jalpaiguri. Forests and grasslands provide habitat for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, gaur, deer and many species of birds. Jungle safaris and wildlife observation from designated watchtowers are major attractions here.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 30–40 km, depending on the entry point and route.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

Chapramari lies close to Gorumara and is separated from the Gorumara landscape by the Murti River. The sanctuary is particularly associated with elephants and gaur, while deer, leopards, wild boar and numerous birds are also found in the area.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 20–30 km.

Murti River

You do not have to enter a forest every day to enjoy the Dooars. The Murti River offers a more relaxed experience with a riverbed, forest surroundings and views towards the foothill landscape.

Murti is located beside the Chapramari and Gorumara forest areas, making it easy to combine with other sightseeing in this part of the Dooars.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 20–30 km.

Samsing

Samsing is one of the places we would suggest when someone says, "I want to see the greener side of Dooars."

The journey takes you through tea-growing country towards the foothills. Tea gardens, forests and hills come together around this part of the region, making Samsing particularly attractive for nature photography and scenic drives.

Closer property: Sylee Bungalow, Damdim
Approximate distance: around 25–35 km.

Suntalekhola

Suntalekhola is generally visited together with Samsing because the two destinations are close to each other.

Forest-covered hills, streams and the surrounding greenery give this area a different character from the open tea estates of the plains. It is a good addition to a day when you want scenery and nature rather than a packed sightseeing schedule.

Closer property: Sylee Bungalow, Damdim
Approximate distance: around 30–40 km.

Rocky Island

Rocky Island is another popular stop around the Samsing area. As the name suggests, the rocky river landscape is the main attraction.

Samsing, Suntalekhola and Rocky Island can therefore be planned together rather than making three separate trips.

Closer property: Sylee Bungalow, Damdim
Approximate distance: around 30–40 km.

Jhalong

As you travel towards Jhalong, the scenery gradually starts feeling more Himalayan. The area is associated with the Jaldhaka River, forested slopes and the Bhutan foothills.

The drive itself is an important part of the experience, especially if this is your first visit to this section of the Dooars.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 35–45 km.

Bindu

Continue further towards the India-Bhutan border and you reach Bindu, another popular destination in the Jaldhaka valley.

The Jaldhaka River and views towards the surrounding hills are the main attractions. Bindu can conveniently be combined with Jhalong when planning a full-day trip.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 45–55 km.

Jaldapara National Park

If the Indian one-horned rhinoceros is high on your wildlife wish list, Jaldapara deserves serious consideration.

The national park is characterised by extensive grasslands, riverine forest and several rivers and streams. The habitat supports the one-horned rhinoceros along with elephants, deer, gaur and a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 50–65 km, depending on the destination or entry point around Jaldapara.

Chilapata Forest

Chilapata lies between the Jaldapara and Buxa landscapes and is another interesting forest destination in the eastern Dooars.

Dense woodland is the main attraction here, and the area is particularly suitable for travellers who want their Dooars itinerary to focus heavily on forests and wildlife.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 60–75 km.

Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa takes you considerably further east and introduces you to another side of the Dooars. The reserve is part of the forested landscape near the Bhutan border and is one of the major protected areas of West Bengal.

A visit here is better treated as a dedicated day trip rather than being squeezed between several other attractions.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 90–110 km, depending on the point visited.

Jayanti

Jayanti is situated beside the Jayanti River in the Buxa landscape. The riverbed with forest-covered hills behind it makes the area particularly scenic.

Travellers visiting Buxa often include Jayanti in the same eastern Dooars itinerary.

Closer property: Nya Sylee Bungalow, Nagrakata
Approximate distance: around 100–115 km.

Gajoldoba

Gajoldoba provides a different experience from the forest safaris of Gorumara and Jaldapara. The Teesta Barrage reservoir and surrounding landscape have made the area particularly popular among birdwatchers, especially when migratory waterbirds arrive. West Bengal Tourism describes Gajoldoba as a birdwatching destination surrounded by the Baikunthapur forest landscape.

Closer property: Sylee Bungalow, Damdim
Approximate distance: around 40–50 km.

Why Should You Visit the Dooars Region?

If Darjeeling and Dooars appear in the same travel conversation, Darjeeling usually gets more attention. That is understandable. Darjeeling has been one of India's best-known hill destinations for generations, and the name itself has enormous recognition.

But that popularity can also leave the Dooars underrated.

The two should not really be treated as substitutes because the experiences are quite different.

Darjeeling is primarily associated with a Himalayan hill-town experience, mountain views, heritage attractions and its famous tea. Dooars brings you down to the Himalayan foothills, where the landscape opens into tea estates, forests, grasslands and river valleys.

This difference matters.

In a single Dooars holiday, you can wake up around a tea estate, spend part of the day on a jungle safari, drive through forest roads and finish the evening back at a bungalow surrounded by the tea-growing landscape.

The region also has some of West Bengal's most important wildlife destinations. Gorumara and Jaldapara are strongly associated with the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Chapramari is known for its elephant population, and the wider Dooars contains an impressive mixture of forests, rivers and grasslands.

Then there is the tea.

The Dooars is a major tea-growing region, yet tea tourism here still receives less attention than Darjeeling tea tourism. That can actually work in your favour as a traveller. You get an opportunity to see another important tea landscape of West Bengal while combining the stay with wildlife and nature tourism.

So, if you have already visited Darjeeling, or simply want to see a less talked-about side of the Himalayan foothills, the Dooars deserves a place on your West Bengal travel list.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

For most travellers, October to March is a convenient period to explore the Dooars. The post-monsoon and winter months are particularly suitable for outdoor sightseeing, wildlife tourism, birdwatching and travelling between tea gardens, forests and rivers.

The Dooars weather changes considerably through summer, monsoon and winter, and forest access can also be affected by seasonal closure periods. If jungle safari is important to your trip, always check the latest forest opening dates before finalizing the itinerary.

Transportation Options

The Dooars is accessible by train, flight and road, but you will normally need a road transfer for the final part of the journey.

New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) is one of the main railway gateways for travellers arriving from Kolkata and other Indian cities. Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the major airport for travellers arriving by air. Depending on your route and destination, railway stations such as New Mal Junction can also be useful.

Once you are in the Dooars, travelling by car is convenient because tea estates, wildlife parks, rivers and other tourist attractions are spread across the region rather than concentrated in one town.

We have a separate guide covering how to reach the Dooars, nearby railway stations, airport connectivity and road travel:

Experience More Than a Hotel Stay in Dooars

The Dooars is not a destination where you need to rush from one tourist point to another.

Give yourself time to experience the tea gardens, Himalayan foothills, forests, rivers and wildlife that make this part of West Bengal different.

With Sylee Bungalow at Damdim and Nya Sylee Bungalow at Nagrakata, you can make the tea-growing landscape part of the stay itself rather than something you only see from the road.

Choose the bungalow that works best for your itinerary, spend your days discovering the Dooars, and leave some time simply to enjoy where you are staying.
